The Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners (CABP) is a tireless group of volunteers, dedicated to fighting for the rights of UK Pension recipients living in Canada.
Peter and I attended with them the September 2009 Hearing at the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in support of their decades-long fight for indexation – we await the result soon!
The CABP are concerned with issues that affect the amount of UK pension you will receive after retirement. For example,
When you receive your Pension, a major downside is that it is not indexed (i.e., you will not receive cost of living increases as with CPP)
For new pensioners, this is not an immediate problem but the purchasing power of the pension diminishes each year as the freeze erodes its value.
To add insult to injury, THIS FREEZING AFFECTS ONLY 48% OF THE PENSIONERS LIVING OUTSIDE THE UK. Pensioners living in Europe, USA, Israel, Jamaica, Barbados and other countries enjoy regular cost of living increases. This is plain discrimination and has been admitted as such by the British Government.
To remedy this situation the CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF BRITISH PENSIONERS, in conjunction with its sister organizations in South Africa and Australia, has launched a legal case and at the present point in time has the British Government in the defendant’s dock at the European Court of Human Rights. If this case is successful it will force the British Government to pay cost of living increases to you and all other pensioners abroad.
I am an ex member of the CABP board and have attended part of the legal proceedings in the House of Lords. As a pensioner myself I fully back this initiative.
CABP’s website is www.britishpensions.com
Membership is only $20 a year which would be recovered immediately the pension is indexed. Joining will also put you on the CABP's magazine list so you will get regular updates on how this fight against discrimination is going. Remember that CABP and its sister organisations are the only ones who are fighting this case for you, it needs your support NOW!
With this in mind, the first year's subscription to CABP will be donated directly by British Pensions Consultants Inc in each agreeing new client's name from Jan 1 2008.
